Pump House, On-Site Thrift Store
Open Every Tuesday and Thursday
9:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

The “Pump House” receives donations from residents and families, as well as from the generous neighborhoods surrounding Salem Lutheran Home. Accepted donations include furniture, clothing, household items, books, games, and holiday decorations. The thrift store is operated by the residents and all funds go directly back to the residents.

Is caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or another serious illness becoming unmanageable? Then join us – a group of individuals experiencing many of the same challenges, turning to each other for wisdom, comfort and support. Salem family, friends and the community are all invited to attend.

National Senior Health and Fitness Day | May 2011

Senior Health and Fitness Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 25 with a free Mind Matters program beginning at 2:00 pm at Salem Lutheran Home, 2361 East 29th Street, in Oakland.

Presenter Dr. Susan Londerville has spent the last 20 years building her expertise as a medical director and private physician specializing in aging and memory loss. Her program is free and open to the public, and will cover various aspects of memory care. Read more

Salem Lutheran Home Offering Acclaimed Eden Alternative Training
May 2011

Oakland, CA – A three-day workshop focusing on the Eden Alternative, a philosophy which offers creative ways to change the culture of elder care facilities, will be held June 13 through 15, 2011, at Salem Lutheran Home, 2361 East 29th Street, in Oakland’s Diamond District. The Eden Alternative is a global movement, active in all of America’s 50 states and numerous Asian and European countries. It was founded in 1991 by award-winning physician Dr. Bill Thomas. The non-profit organization has the potential to remake the experience of aging and disability across America and around the world. Dr. Thomas has been hailed for starting a revolution to radically transform long-term care. Read more

Salem Salutes: Honoring 57 Years of Leadership and Volunteering for Seniors | April 2011

April 1, 2011 – Oakland, Calif. – Salem Lutheran Home celebrates an incredible 57 years of leadership and volunteerism on behalf of seniors as it salutes local volunteers Joan Ellison and Fran Shinn at a special fundraising dinner to support “Partners in Caring at Salem (PICS).” Belva Davis, pioneering author and journalist, will serve as mistress of ceremonies for the benefit dinner and salute at Scott’s Seafood, Jack London Square, in Oakland at 5 p.m., on Sunday, May 1, 2011. Salem Hosts a Veteran's Day Showcase | November 2010

Oakland, Calif. – Salem Lutheran Home in Oakland is hosting a Veteran’s Day Showcase with the Stagebridge Dreamers, a senior-focused musical and storytelling group. The event is being held at Salem Lutheran Home, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. and will feature storytelling, resident’s photos, memorabilia and music from the 30s, 40s and 50s.

To honor residents, staff and family members who have served their country, Salem’s residents have compiled beautiful storyboards for the event which highlight their experiences and include photographs of themselves and loved ones in uniform. Read more
